US — Venice, Florida. An individual was taken into custody on Sunday, November 22 after breaking into a couple’s home and using a machete to inflict life-threatening injuries on the husband.
Robert Gibson, a 27-year-old male who identifies as a woman named Alana, admitted to Punta Gorda police that he developed an interest in a female former co-worker and wanted to date her. As he drove to a job interview in Maine, he decided to stop at the house the woman shared with her husband, kill the husband and convince the woman to run away with him.
Mr Gibson shattered a bedroom window and entered the home while the couple were asleep in bed. According to the husband, Mr Gibson repeatedly cut him in the head, chest, arm and leg. When the man’s wife attempted to stop the attack, Mr Gibson began strangling her.
As Sarasota County deputies arrived at the home at around 12:20 AM, the suspect fled in a white Chevrolet Silverado truck. He evaded deputies’ attempt to stop the truck as it ran a stop sign, and led them on a 17-minute car chase that ranged in speeds of 75 and 100 mph. Law enforcement was ultimately able to slow the truck with stop sticks that punctured all four tires, before using a precision immobilization technique maneuver to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The man, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the brutal attack, was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. The survivor and his wife, mother and step-father, who all reside at the home, were able to identify Mr Gibson as the attacker.
Deputies recovered an axe, machete, backpack, compound bow and several arrows from the home. The items are believed to belong to the perpetrator.
Mr Gibson told police that he had initially planned to use the bow and arrow, but changed his mind after realizing it could accidentally kill the wife.
Court records list Mr Gibson as female and unemployed.
