UK — Godmanchester, England. A violent rapist whose attack left a woman bruised and suffering repeat nightmares was referred to with female pronouns throughout the criminal trial.
During the Friday, 15 January sentencing at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge David Farrell described Michelle Winter, aged 49, as a dangerous individual with a “clear propensity to violence.”
Judge Farrell handed Mr Winter a 15-year prison sentence for charges of Rape and Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.
The crime that was the subject of the trial took place on 16 May 2020 in a Buttermel Close, Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire home.
On the following day, the rape survivor reported the incident to local police. Officers observed at the time that the woman was covered in bruises.
The rape survivor reported that she had been experiencing recurring nightmares about the incident, often waking up screaming, “Get off me.”
Working closely with staff at The Elms Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), police were able to support the woman and build a case against the assailant.
“I would like to applaud the courage shown by the victim, who despite the ordeal she suffered, was able to report the offence and help bring Winter to justice,” Detective Constable Jack Henderson said.
